Taking part in Wanksgiving this year. Yesterday, I posted an original ficlet I had lying around, and today, I posted a fic with an, uhh, unconventional pairing for me. And because I was a little hesitant about it, both of these went on my secondary AO3 account, where they will appear after creator reveals next Thursday.

- Well, seeing as how it's the only post between this Writing Log entry and the last, it's obvious that I did actually write something!!! Yay!!!? The question mark is because what I wrote is a self-indulgent alternate scene PWP with an unfortunate title. I have no idea what was wrong with my brain when I wrote it other than Hormones. But it's done, and added another 2k words to my YTD total.

- I'm still hooked on the idea of making zines. Because I haven't written so much, I decided to simply gather my stories in fandom- or otherwise-themed collections, with some simple illustrations tossed in. I think I'll print a few copies for myself when I'm done, and maybe throw an EPUB and printable PDF up on itch.io or Google Drive if anyone else wants them.

- It's almost halfway through February and I still haven't started posting for Fannish Fifty yet! I have quite a few subjects brainstormed already, so it's just a matter of committing words to... screen. And I'm happy to report that while many of my posts will be about the usual suspects, there are a few already that branch out from my regular fannish oeuvre. Variety! :D

It's less likely than you think.

But I did! I got some words down on creative projects and I'm happy about that! The bulk of them came from writing to a prompt on Tumblr about a hypothetical fic (the prompt explains it better). It featured Rinoa, Edea, and Angelo going on a road trip and Edea adopting a scraggly little dog of her own that she names (somewhat) after Irvine. It's as silly as it sounds, but damn, if it didn't generate a few plot bunnies of its own!

The other story is totally out of my usual oeuvre, going to some pretty dark places, but the beginning of it just kind of poured out early Tuesday morning. Basically, Rinoa, tired of being treated like a kid even by her friends, runs away from Balamb Garden on her 21st birthday to celebrate like an "adult." Instead, she runs into Seifer, and he takes her to a new club in Timber, where things really spiral out of control, fast. Rinoa loses control of her powers, there's a bit of dubcon, and a body count by the end. I don't know, in recent years I've become fascinated with the potential of darkness inside Rinoa, and by her relationships with others she doesn't get much screen time with in canon. I don't know if I'll finish it, but it might make a nice dark bit for Halloween.

Anyway, I suspect I may have written as many words about the words I wrote as I did in their actual respective projects! So, on to the stats:

It shouldn't have been that hard. A fluffy story featuring one of my OTPs should flow, but this one was like pulling teeth. But I finished it! And I love how it came out. So, totally worth it.

But really, my writing process has slowed to a crawl. I don't know if it's a matter of confidence, or focus, or a strange combination of other factors, but I want my old brain back. :( Ah well, maybe having finished something will jump-start it again. I hope?

Next up, the prompt requests from Tumblr, then try to get my Yahtzee fics done, and maybe a treat or two for Femslash Kink.

I will consider any single one of these done in the next month a major accomplishment.

(A little early, but hey, whatever.)

I like to take advantage of any time my brain isn't snarling and snapping and flailing around like a rabid weasel, so I wrote two fics this past week, both for Transistor.

The first was finally clearing out a Tumblr prompt from last June, but it isn't a very happy story. I'm proud of it, regardless, and the prompter liked it, too. (They said I wrote a good Auden, and that made my day! I love that guy to bits, so it's nice to know I can do him justice. :D)

And because I felt bad about handing the fandom this downer fic, I also finished up a mild hurt/comfort fic that I've been picking away at since December. I'm not sure how I feel about this one; as a direct sequel to another fic, it probably won't get as much traffic, and I'm not sure it's representative of my strongest writing. But there are only so many ways to describe removing hand wraps, and I think the emotion around it is done pretty well. Anyway, I'm just glad to get this little idea out there. :)

Hmm, not bad, considering the weeks lost to the rabid weasel in my head! :)

ETA: I did some light editing on the second story, and I like it a whole lot better, now. Amazing what tweaking a few paragraphs can do for one's confidence in a fic!

I was actually productive this past week! I wrote two fics: one for Valentine's Day for my newest OTP (set before their actual relationship and having nothing to do with Valentine's Day at all, ironically enough, but hey, chocolates!) and a late treat for Chocolate Box (which I can't wait to share!). (Damn, those are a lot of exclamation points.)

I've got a few more stories on deck (none of them my long-neglected WIPs, I'm afraid), and a couple of events I'm looking at. One, the Final Fantasy Kiss Battle is happening again! I haven't found a prompt that really speaks to me yet, but there are more being added and a long weekend coming up to play around with some of them, and hopefully, not get too carried away. (I began trying to build a story around a Quistis/Rinoa prompt and ended up rewriting the ending of FF8 and possibly breaking the time loop and all the characters along with it, and...yeah, that's not the kind of story for a fun and silly kiss battle. XD)

Also, Smut 4 Smut signups opened today; I know I said I wasn't going to do too many exchanges this year, but I figure, since I missed out on Chocolate Box, I might give this one a whirl. I'm really loving the Original Work prompts. I hope I get an assignment with one of them!

Still struggling with getting words down. I did manage a double drabble, and I'm actually really happy with it! :D Tumblr's not, though; my fic doesn't appear in the fandom tag. Could it be because I used the word "smut" in the post? I didn't specifically tag it as such, nor as NSFW. I even put the "offensive" content under a cut. So...what gives, Tumblr? >:/

This is the second time this has happened, though the first time, my fic did appear after a day or two. But this leads me to wonder how I'm going to share fics, outside of AO3, in the future. While I do write the stories I want to, I also see fic as a way of communicating with others in my fandoms. And if that communication gets cut off, that would be sad.

Oh, well. What can you do but keep writing? Also, perhaps this is a subtle sign for me to clean up my act (and my brain). ;)

Anyway, enough moping! I did manage to write a little bit between Christmas and New Year's, to bring my 2021 total to just over 118k. Not bad, considering there were weeks on end where I didn't produce anything at all.

And I'm incredibly fond of the fic that came of it, that "Bracken and Fir" I'm talking up on every fic meme that catches my attention. I fell in love with The Blue Castle and its lovely couple, and I was inspired. Come on, spending a summer night on a bed of bracken in the woods? Sounds pretty darn romantic to me (as long as I don't think about wolves and bears and the like ;))!

I really wish I was better at typing on my phone. It's just that my thumbs feel too big for the keyboard, my phone is terrible at predicting what I actually want to type, and having to shift into the punctuation keyboard every time I need a quotation mark makes writing stories very, very frustrating for me. But if I could use the lulls at work to get more done on my YT assignment, I wouldn't be half as frazzled about it as I am now.

Alternatively, if I could use the lulls at work to purge my brain of the incredibly invasive Transistor Red/Blue vaguely hurt/comfort fic idea that's been bouncing around in there, screaming, for the past week and a half, I'd have many more braincells to devote to my YT fic.

Regardless, the YT fic is in progress. I have it all plotted and I have most of the dialogue written, so it's just a matter of stringing it together. Easy-peasy, right?

It seems the only way I can be productive this year is through exchanges. I rewrote the second chapter of my Femslash Ex assignment (and still have to tweak the third before Saturday), and I picked up a pinch hit. I feel a bit bad admitting this, but I'm having way more fun with the pinch hit than I did with my assignment. I think the reason is that I tried my best to write in a more realistic/mundane setting for my main assignment, whereas the pinch hit necessitated a fantasy setting.

I just work better with farfetched places/characters/things, I guess.

They're about the same length at the moment, though PH is probably going to be a little bit longer in the end. Oh, and they're also at opposite ends of the rating system. My brain has been pinging back and forth so hard this week, it'll be positively scrambled by the time I get to my Yuletide assignment. Apologies in advance to my YT recipient! ;)

But, at the end of the day, all that really matters is that I got words onto a screen, and I liked them enough to keep them around.
