Yoinked from Bluesky:
Graphic titled 'Get to know my shipping preferences and ships.' Questions in the graphic are listed and answered below.

1. List 3 shipping tropes you love

♥ Friends to lovers
♥ Mutual pining
♥ Fix-it fic

(Can you tell I'm not much of a tropey reader?)

2. List 3 shipping tropes you don't love

× Fake dating
× Enemies to lovers where their animosity is based on immaturity and has no more depth than grade-school playground bs
× Grumpy/sunshine - Yes, I am putting this here because even though I like its narrative potential, it has been too frequently so poorly executed as to leave me wondering why either character can even stand to be in the general vicinity of the other. Piss-poor writing by actually published authors is to blame for my newfound hatred of this trope!

(Can you also tell that my recent foray into romancelandia has left me bitter and scarred?)

3. One emotional aspect of a ship that always gets you

Devotion. The kind where both characters will weather any storm that comes at them without running away, without breaking up, without taking it out on each other. The kind of devotion that makes aging beautiful, the kind that makes the characters feel safe in one another's company.

4. One physical aspect of a ship that always gets you

Light, tender touches. They're so effective regardless of the stage of the relationship the characters are at. Just starting out? Way to up the tension! In an established relationship? Wonderfully comforting and/or a prelude to a sweet love scene. Together for what feels like forever? An affirmation of connection and a comfort with vulnerability.

They're just so versatile! ♥

5. Multiship or mono ship?

Okay, now we're getting into "it depends" territory. Because this does totally depend on the fandom. I like and write both, but in some fandoms, I just can't imagine certain characters in other pairings.

6. Rarepairs or mainstream?

Most of my pairings are mainstream within fandoms small enough that they qualify as rarepairs overall. XD

7. Polyamory or monogamy?

Once again, it depends. On the fandom, and the characters. I've only written monogamous ships so far, but if I feel it fits the characters, I'd definitely consider writing poly.

8. If the ship is physical, reversible or not?

I hate, hate, HATE how so many people assume that romantic/sexual roles are not only hard, defined, and immutable, but also an indicator of personality! I realize that there are people irl who have hard and fast preferences, but there are also plenty who like to switch things up every now and again. Whatever the characters are up for in the moment, I'm on board.

So, reversible.

9. Do you always have romantic ships for fandoms?

No. There are some fandoms where romance just never enters the equation.

10. How important is the sexual part (if any) for your ship?

Listen, I like smut, but it really isn't the core of any ship for me. It's like the cherry on top, fun and sweet, but not necessary for me to enjoy the sundae.

11. Opinion on platonic ships?

Love 'em! I don't write nearly enough of them, but they can be fun ways to explore character dynamics. Not everything has to end in love or sex.

12. List 3 ships you currently love

♥ Barney/Valancy (The Blue Castle)
♥ Red/Auden (Transistor)
♥ Auron/Lulu (Final Fantasy X)

13. List 5 OTPs from other fandoms

I'm not sure I even have 5 OTPs from other fandoms, at least not fandoms I've been active in. Let's see:

• Squall/Rinoa (Final Fantasy VIII)
• Celes/Terra (Final Fantasy VI)
Okay, I'm gonna throw some platonic ships in here (because yes, they count as OTPs in their own way, to me!):
• Aya & Daniel (Parasite Eve)
• Reki & Rakka (Haibane Renmei)
• The girls and James (a platonic OT5 from Derry Girls)

14. Opinion on the importance of marriage?

Generally, none. In fandoms where the characters are already married, however, I do like to imagine them having a good time together.

15. Opinion on OC kids?

NOPE.

Saw this floating around DW. I've been wanting to try posting more on here, and this seems like a fun, doable challenge.

Fannish Fifty 2023

"This is a challenge to make fifty posts about fannish things. They can be whatever kind of posts you’d like - movie reviews, fannish recs, a story about meeting a fellow fan, the time you tried to bake a cake in the shape of a spaceship… anything!"

If you want to give this a go, too, just head on over and sign up! :)

I know I go on and on here about wishing I was part of an active fandom community, and wishing there were zines centered on things I actually know about, but now that there is, I find I'm pretty meh about it.

I think I would be more excited if it was a general FF8 thing. Don't get me wrong: I love Squinoa; it was my first OTP, and I still have a huge soft spot for it. But I'm not sure I can write it well, anymore, at least not in the romantic/fluff way this zine is focusing on. Which is a shame, because the me of two years ago or so would be losing her shit at this announcement.

I think I'll let a few ideas percolate for a while, anyway, and see if I can't come up with at least a few pitches, just to say I tried. Hey, as long as they end up together and happy, I can put them through the emotional wringer along the way, right? >;)

The Final Fantasy Kiss Battle is back! I really had a lot of fun with this last year, and look forward to participating again. Swing on by and check it out and leave a prompt or two (or however many you like)! :)

Tweetling

I'm ever so slowly wading into Twitter. My account is still set to private, mainly because I haven't posted anything yet. But I won't say it hasn't come without a boatload of social anxiety. Joining anything new always does. I have a stupid fear that I'm bothering people or intruding into others' spaces, and that always takes a bit of time to get over.

I did find this lovely guide to better curating your experience on Twitter by [profile] tobli on my Network page here on DW, and I love the suggestions! I've set up a private list at the moment, and liked a few tweets, and it really just helps to get my feet wet before jumping into the giant pool that is Twitter.

I'm still definitely in the "trying to get comfortable" phase right now, but I hope I can use it to expand my fannish interaction once I do settle in.
deemoyza: ('I need to punch!' (Buttercup; PPG))
For the most part, I've had a pretty decent experience on Tumblr. I like the UI, I love the chronological feed, and I have a lot of fun chattering away in the tags. But this latest steaming pile of BS is just...tiring. And it makes me wonder exactly what kind of relationship exists between Tumblr and Apple.

I use Tumblr on desktop and Android, so this change doesn't affect my experience directly, but it definitely affects the reach of everyone's posts. Especially since so many people on Tumblr are wonderfully creative, it's sad to think that one wrong innocuous tag could hide a lovely story or a beautiful picture from so many others.

It's just plain stupid, and it's only going to make the situation Tumblr purports to improve much, much worse. Yes, tags are used for searching, but I'd argue that their primary function is for filtering. For example, I have a weak stomach and strong imagination, and therefore, I cannot handle seeing gore, so I filter that tag out. Incentivizing people to avoid tagging things that might be triggers/squicks/plain unpleasant to others only puts everyone at risk of coming across content that offends or upsets them. In short, Tumblr is actively removing the controls currently in place for people to curate a safe, enjoyable experience for themselves.

And what's with some of these banned tags? Self reblog? Long post? About? Queue??! Just...WTF? Preaching to the choir, here, I know, but I need to vent because half-assed "safety" measures like this that make the whole place even more unsafe for everyone involved just make me want to beat my head against the wall. (Don't worry, I won't! XD)

Anyway, while I'm not jumping ship on Tumblr just yet, I have been looking to expand my social media presence a bit, and I've been kicking around the idea of setting up a Twitter account for a while. I'm not sure about it, though, and I was wondering if anyone might be willing to share their impressions of/experience with the site. For reference, I'm planning to use it similar to how I use my Tumblr, that is, for "fangirling, writing, cute stuff and randomness," and my favorite fandoms are either small, old, or both.

So, bearing that in mind, would Twitter be a decent fit? Are there any tips for getting started that anyone would like to share? A lot of my fandom conversations on Tumblr have dried up as of late, and it's getting pretty lonely, so I'd be happy if I could find a place to rekindle that feeling of community. Just sending out my feelers here, so any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks! :D

Monday's child is fair of face

Create: Produce something that focuses on appearance (of a person, a thing, a place etc). Focus on describing and depicting the detail, or the overall impression. It doesn't have to be about beauty or attractiveness in any traditional sense, but whatever it is that is compelling, unique, impressive about the person, thing, place etc. Whilst this prompt is very visual, you can also focus on a non visual aspect of how someone/something appears, the first impression, the feeling, the atmosphere, the striking feature.

Squee: Share something beautiful, compelling, unique, impressive that everyone should see/experience. It could be a picspam of that drop dead gorgeous person, it could be your favourite painting, or a place you think everyone should have on their bucket list to visit before they die or something else entirely.

Create: I offer you an absolutely sap-tastic Transistor minific, below the cut.

Red/Auden syrupy fluff )

Squee: Here's a picture of the "Infinity Mirrored Room" by Yayoi Kusama. It is truly an ethereal experience. You step into a small booth and the door closes behind you, then the lights turn on, and for a short time (the limit was 45 seconds at this installation), you're transported to another world, or perhaps, another sky. Breathtakingly beautiful. I'd see this again in a heartbeat, if I ever got the chance.

Ran across this on my Network page, and it looks interesting.

Billed as "a week of prompts and 'tasks' to elicit Squee and Creativity," it will apparently offer discussion/creative prompts. From the info post:

The prompts are based on the nursery rhyme 'Monday's Child' but often with a 'not so obvious' interpretation. One prompt is focused on creating something new (fandom related or not), the other is focused on squeeing about existing things (fandom related or not). Both can be filled in any medium you like (writing, art, interpretative dance, voice recording, video, photo collage etc). There is no need to sign-up and you can participate as little or as much as you like. Take a look at the prompts, if something sparks and you want to share the results, drop a note with a link in the comments. Job's a good'un, gov.

So, if anyone's interested, click the banner and check it out! The event starts on August 23.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

It's very easy to mess up, and extremely difficult to get right.  I don't seek it out, for that reason, though I think I might give it a chance if I was familiar with the author's work and knew the writing and humor would likely appeal to me.

Day 9: Drop the cast of a fandom you follow into a reality tv show - who/what/why?  If you need a list of reality TV show examples, click here.

Transistor characters on Big Brother!  Sybil going all goo-goo eyes over Red and glaring at Blue and generally making his life hell.  Shomar pranking everybody, Preston pacing back and forth, desperate to be back on the road.  Farrah in her own little world, painting, and Niola trying (and failing) to set up some sort of social structure.  Darzi criticizing everyone's fashion choices, Olmarq trying to run out his excess energy by working out and getting in trouble for accidentally breaking things.  Wave and Grant having heated discussions over politics, Henter profiling each of the other contestants based on their personalities/hobbies/possessions.  Bailey sitting in a corner reading and wishing she was anywhere else, Royce sitting in a corner smoking and mumbling and working on obscure equations.  Red sitting on the patio picking at a guitar and writing lyrics, Blue in the backyard teaching Olmarq how to box (Olmarq accidentally breaks his nose).  Asher and Lillian completely through with everyone's shit, and often being the only voices of reason in the house.

deemoyza: (Booyaka! (Selphie; FF8))

Day 7: What's the longest time you've been in a fandom? Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way.

Even though I didn't start writing fic until 2018, I've been involved with the FF8 fandom since I first played the game in 2002, on message boards and by making my own little wallpapers with sappy song lyrics imposed over screenshots that I never shared online.  So, nineteen years.  Jeez, where has the time gone?
deemoyza: (Default)
Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?

Silliness. I took a few semesters of German in school, and I've dabbled in it over the years, and I've always picked out phrases that sounded like they'd make cute or funny pseudonyms. The name Dee Moyza is a phonetic spelling of "die Mäuse", which simply means "the mice." There's no deep meaning behind it, but I've apparently been toying around with it as a name (using various spellings) for at least twelve or thirteen years: I doodled this little family sometime back in 2008 or 2009, and just found the scan on an old USB drive recently. :)
deemoyza: (Flower)
Day 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?

I've been incredibly lucky that others I've interacted with via fandom have been friendly, encouraging, and incredibly supportive.  But I think one of my most memorable fandom moments came in a comment I received on a fic that dealt with a character's passing years before and what, if anything, remained of that person in the living world.  The commenter mentioned that they had lost their mother a few years prior to reading this fic, but that reading it made them feel close to her again, as if she was right there next to them.

I cried when I read that comment the first time, and I still get teary remembering it.  It was a simple little fic for me to write, but knowing it inspired such a lovely feeling in somebody I've never met warms my heart.

Day 2: You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them?  Bonus question: What about adding a third to your OTP from a different fandom?  Who and why?

I tend to have an OTP per fandom, so I'll work with Squall/Rinoa from FF8 here, and I'll go ahead and add Zell to the mix.  Zell's a good boy and gets along pretty well with both of them.  I bet he'd give the best hugs, and can pick up the affection slack when Squall's just not feeling up to showing it (hey, learning to change your life and outlook is hard!  Squall deserves to be cut a few breaks here and there).  Despite not always knowing the right thing to say, I think Zell intuitively understands both Squall and Rinoa as individuals, and could be a fun little glue helping keep them together until they "set".

Bonus: I think Yuna from FFX would be a good addition to Squall/Rinoa, as well.  She's serious and determined, but she's not averse to fun.  I think she and Rinoa would have long conversations about standing up for one's principles and the well-being of others, and I think Squall would really respect her commitment and discipline.

I'm unofficially participating in The June Something as a way to get around to posting more frequently here. Let's see if I can answer all twenty questions this month!

Also, how is it already June?!

Day 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

It's gotten more varied. At the beginning of 2020, I was just branching out to writing fics in fandoms other than FF8. Now, I've got a few fandoms under my belt, and I post and reblog content from them on Tumblr, as well. While it sometimes feels like my little corner of fandom has gotten even smaller in the past year, the fans who remain have great ideas and headcanons, and produce some truly wonderful fics and art, so it's definitely become a case of quality over quantity. :D

deemoyza: (heart balloons)
I'm sure I'm not the only one. Sometimes, you come across a fictional character or pairing or dynamic that just feels liberating to contemplate and write about, though exactly what you're being liberated from is unclear. I'm not a big shipper in fandom, so it's very little wonder why my current ship obsession never crossed my mind until I saw it in a prompt a few months ago, but after writing just a few short fics featuring it, something about it just clicked with me.

I'm referring to the pairing of Quistis/Rinoa from FF8, which has been an absolute joy to write, a boon to my creativity, and had positive little ripple effects throughout other aspects of my thoughts and emotions. I've wanted to write about this for a while, but it isn't an easy subject to articulate; however, sometimes the best approach is to dive right in, and that is what I'll do here. This post will be long, and a bit personal, so fair warning. ;)

Interaction. Just the word makes me a little nervous. XD However, I am easing into it, and I'm happy to say that, in the past few days, I have actually made some progress! :D Here on Dreamwidth, I have interacted with a few new people, and I've joined this community, as well as GYWO. Over on Tumblr, I've started following a few new blogs, and have reblogged/commented on the work of fellow writers.

I think it's just a matter of getting comfortable in a certain space. It's definitely a process for me, but, once settled, my tendency to ramble on really comes to the forefront! (I consider this to be a fair warning. ;) )
deemoyza: (Default)

While I have a handful of highly-specific goals for 2020, all of them fall into at least one of the broader goals below:

* Read more - Both fanfic and original fiction. I'm definitely a slacker in this department, and I really need to improve.

* On a related note, interact more with others. Comment on fics and blog posts, ask questions, and the like. I'm still pretty shy, even online, but I realize the only way to change that is to face down the awkwardness and move past it. (This is probably my most difficult goal of the year, despite, technically, being the easiest to accomplish.)

* Finish my current fanfic WIPs - Especially since I have a story I'm really excited to get to, once I finish the previous installment in the series it belongs to.

* Branch out into other fandoms with a few one-shots - While I have no shortage of fanfic ideas regarding various properties, I've always felt too unsure of my level of knowledge about said properties to write those stories. Perhaps it's time to stop second-guessing and just dive in, and learn more about them as I go.

* Participate in more prompts and challenges - Not only should this help with my interaction goal, but it should also help me push my creative boundaries a little. I hope. :)

This should be an interesting post to revisit at the end of the year! ;)

My favorite fandom spaces, at the moment, are AO3 and FFN. I have had some of my most interesting discussions and invigorating fan interactions in the comment threads/ PMs there. I love to talk about my writing process and inspirations, and hear about others', as well, and the headcanons and narrative ideas tossed around in these conversations have turned into some fun fics, both to write and to read. :)
