Did I need to add something else to my WIP pile? No. Resoundingly, NO. But guess who decided to fool around yesterday afternoon making e-books of her fics? I've gotten three done so far, and they look so professional! I am ridiculously, inordinately proud of these things and can't wait to show them off.

But! In thinking of stories that would look very nice in e-book form, I came around to "Special Order," my FF8 bakery AU, and my scrapped "Baker's Dozen" project of stories set in that universe. From the little blurbs I wrote for some of them, they didn't sound half bad! I just ran out of time and motivation (let's face it, the FF8 fandom is kinda flighty, and not particularly communicative outside of Discord). I might never get back around to it, but I'd like to share what I have of the project outline, with some commentary sprinkled here and there, just for kicks. :)

Also, have a peek at the covers of Ellone's book and magazine! She's an expert on making the most of small spaces, having grown up on a ship in this universe, too (but only because her parents were incorrigible adventurers).



I really had a lot of fun thinking these ideas up, and even if they never become fics of their own, I hope they helped to flesh out the Special Order universe a little bit more!

Etehril sat at the base of a ruined lighthouse, a crust of blood and sea spray drying on her cheeks, cut through by the trails of her last few tears. She'd reached the end of sadness, the point where pain became numbness. The point where there was nothing, no one, left to cry for.

SeeD had seen to that.

They'd pursued her through Esthar, across the sea and across another continent, razing everything in their path, to capture her, contain her, neutralize her, for nothing more than an accident in her blood, an ancient power she'd neither sought nor wanted.

They chased her to the end of the world, and there, they gave her a new name:

Ultimecia.

She'd snapped then, raising the earth beneath them in jagged spires, tearing their bodies apart, bathing in the blood of her persecutors and feeling no remorse. If they insisted she was Ultimecia, then she would become Ultimecia.

They'd hunted her to the end of the world; she would hunt them to the end of time.

She stepped forward, among the SeeDs' corpses, and raised the earth around them again. She would build a new home, here. A new life.

Alone, and unafraid.

She thought it was a hallucination – a flower field in the dead of Trabian winter, surrounding the enemy, taking them somewhere – until she noticed her companions had seen it, too. One cheered and clapped, while the other cursed and cowered in the snow.

"Wow, Selphie," the excited one said, "what was that?"

"I don't know," she replied, wincing as something stirred in her brain.

"How'd you do it? Can you do it again?"

She repeated herself, shaking her head, as much in answer to the question as to calm the creature inside her mind, her forbidden friend who did know.
