I’m still taking it easy, but this week I did all my new year’s cleaning, which was very cathartic. I also backed up my files on an external hard drive, and then I made a backup of the backup. This will not halt the inexorable creep of entropy, but it’s good for my peace of mind.

She found the stash of silverware in the back of her grandmother’s closet after her death, swaddled in mouse-nibbled dishcloths, crammed in byzantine arrangements into dusty cardboard boxes. All of it was black with tarnish from decades of disuse, save one piece she took at first to be the wedge of a cake slicer. The knife was big and freshly polished to a shine like moonlight by someone who evidently knew her grandmother’s house and belongings better than she did.

2025 Music Wrap-Up

As mentioned previously, I don’t use streaming music services. So I do a DIY end-of-year wrap-up for my music listening. Obviously, I listened to music I already owned as well, but this is the highlight reel of the year’s new purchases.

I feel like this summary could just be a copy-paste from last year: more instrumental music, less pulled from the classics I missed in my youth. A lot of musicians I love had new albums this year, so I spent a fair amount of time listening to very current music.

I had a lot of weird one-offs, often found via poking around on Bandcamp. I often found that while I liked them enough to buy and listen to the whole thing, the albums did not tend to stick for me. That's okay--I know I sometimes come back to music years later and rediscover it when I'm ready. I don't mind.

Top album of the year was, without question, Djo's The Crux. If other albums this year lacked in stickiness, it's because this album was goddamn flypaper. The longer I listened, the more I got out of it, circling back around to tracks that didn't immediately grab me and suddenly finding something to love.

New albums* heard: 64--down yet again, I had fewer multi-album weeks, in part because I bought fewer short/light albums that needed to be bundled to make enough for a week's listening
*(discretely purchased music items, includes singles, EPs, and other short forms along with “full” albums)

Contributing artists: 54 (not counting multi-artist compilations)--same as last year

Oldest album: An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer, 1972

Newest album: Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan (The Mountain Goats, November 7, 2025)

Top artists by albums: Louie Zong continues to lead in this category with four albums, but this wasn't a big year for me to dive deep into the back catalogs

Most repeated albums: Even In Arcadia (Sleep Token), This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway (Lola Young), The Crux (Djo), Coydog (Carter Vail)

Tracks of note: Stunner (Carter Vail), Nervous Dancer (Louie Zong), Anoana (Heilung), We Will All Go Together When We Go (Tom Lehrer), March of Cambreadth (Alexander James Adams), Charlie's Garden (Djo), Alibi (Hurray For The Riff Raff), Factories In Heaven (The Scoffs), SCRAP HEAP (Louie Zong)

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm Jay (he/him). I'm a fandom old, though my fannish contributions have been thin on the ground for a few years due to life things. I write and post original fiction regularly, though. I also talk about music, which I'm always open to recs for, and gardening.

Snowflake is a nice, low-pressure way to potentially meet new people. I look forward to it as a touchpoint for each new year. There's usually a good mix of prompts for looking forward and looking back. In place of setting resolutions, I think of this event as my yearly taking stock activity.

Candy Hearts Exchange Letter 2026

Dear Candy Hearts Writer,

Thank you so much for volunteering to write a story for me! I’m the sort of nerd who’s interested in lore and worldbuilding, but I have a major soft spot for stories that focus on friendship and romance. I also enjoy relationships in which the characters don’t particularly like each other but have an interesting dynamic together. Situationships? Why not!

I admire and appreciate stories of all lengths. If you’re here to write a short vignette, that would make me very happy. But longer stories are welcome too, of course! Whatever you create, I’m excited to see what you do with these characters and their relationships.

I am totally okay with:

Signups are now open!

Please consult the tagset for the list of fandoms and relationships you can request and offer. If you can't find a canon you nominated, make sure to check Uncategorized Fandoms, which is where fandoms will be listed if they haven't appeared on AO3 yet or if I've had to alter the canonical tag.

Important: While the Relationships field on the signup form has a dropdown that, when you start typing, should connect with the tagset, AO3 always doesn't display all nominated relationships for a fandom. If the relationship you're trying to request/offer is in the tagset but not appearing as a selection that you can make, please copy-paste it directly from tagset into your signup form. This will let the system recognize that it's the same tag.

Remember, Character A & Character B is platonic, Character A/Character B is romantic/sexual.

There's a letters post, if you want to link your letter there, and you'll also be able to browse requests either on AO3 or the app.

Signups will be open until January 7, 11:59PM EST. Please see the signup rules here.

You can comment here or contact the mod email--candyheartsex at gmail dot com--if you have any questions.

If you've written a Candy Hearts letter, you can link it here for easy perusal! These letters are optional, and your creator isn't obligated to adhere to them (though they must abide by any do-not-wants listed in your actual signup), but they can provide helpful extra details--prompts, general likes, descriptions of how you see the requested relationships, etc.

Please do not post a link to your letter here unless it is complete and unlocked.

For ease of reference, please record your details as follows:

Fandom/Relationship Promo Post

[personal profile] candyheartsex
If you want to promote your fandom or the relationships you want to request/create for, this post is for you!

How you write your your recommendations, enthusiastic squeeing, or manifestos is up to you, but please put the name of your canon in the subject line of your comment. Here--with liberal borrowing from Yuletide's promo setup--are some other things you may want to include:

  • Title
  • Medium (e.g., Book Series, Podcast, TV Show, etc.)
  • Approximate Length (e.g., page count, runtime, etc. This is also a good place to mention if only a specific installment of the canon is relevant to the relationship(s) you're requesting.)
  • Where to (Legally) Find It
  • Brief Description
  • What You Love About the Canon
  • What You Love About Your Ship(s)
  • Kinds of Things You're Planning to Ask For
  • Content Notes (e.g., incest, period-typical attitudes, noncon, torture, etc. These notes are optional and may not cover everything even if they're included.)

Please post a separate comment for each promo you do, so the canon title can always be highlighted in the subject line.

Привет and welcome to our new Russian friends from LiveJournal! We are happy to offer you a new home. We will not require identification for you to post or comment. We also do not cooperate with Russian government requests for any information about your account unless they go through a United States court first. (And it hasn't happened in 16 years!)

Importing your journal from ЖЖ may be slow. There are a lot of you, with many posts and comments, and we have to limit how fast we download your information from ЖЖ so they don't block us. Please be patient! We have been watching and fixing errors, and we will go back to doing that after the holiday is over.

I am very sorry that we can't translate the site into Russian or offer support in Russian. We are a much, much smaller company than LiveJournal is, and my high school Russian classes were a very long time ago :) But at least we aren't owned by Sberbank!

С Новым Годом, and welcome home!

Thank you also to everyone who's been giving our new neighbors a warm welcome. I love you all ❤️

Time looked up from its work, delicately lifting hands away from the dominoes it had just added to the elaborate Rube Goldberg machine that was its creation, and it smiled to hear the sound of fireworks and cheering and champagne corks. Accustomed to being blamed for age and loss, it was nice for so many of them to suddenly remember who also brought the coming spring and the maturing wines and the growing children. For one who gnawed iron and had stones for meal, it was a welcome relief instead to drink down one night’s worth of their frenzied gratitude for the chance to see another year.

Like 2024, this year was mostly about figuring out how to make good art, as well as how to find a place for it in the world despite being shut out by gatekeepers. Next year I will continue to challenge the gatekeepers! In the meantime, I’ll keep cultivating the most beautiful garden I can outside the wall.

Here’s to lots of green and growing energy in 2026. 🌿

This year I gave myself permission not to finish books I don’t like and to drop games that lose my attention. Still, I did okay.

I didn’t work as hard to maintain a steady posting schedule this year, and nothing bad happened. Nothing good happened either. Social media is changing, and engagement is down across the board. Still, I did okay.

In 2026, I’d like to keep track of AO3 comments I leave, with the point being to encourage myself to leave more of them. Even if it’s just a generic “I really enjoyed this story,” it’s still worth sending the author a nice note. I appreciate short comments when I get them myself, and I think seeing short comments on a work on AO3 encourages other readers to leave short comments too. Not everything needs to be an essay. The things you do for fun don’t have to be difficult to be meaningful.

The annual lighting of Beacon House will take place at sundown on Wednesday, so bring your candles, flashlights, lanterns and pocket lighters and meet on the hill. Our lights will be reflected into the many mirrors in the House, helping to renew the infinite light that bounces around inside there. Local tradition says that this light is needed to ensure that the new year can find its way to our community, which sounds like a good idea whether taken literally or metaphorically.

Last year, I posted a reflection on my favourite characters of 2024. It was a lot of fun, so I thought I'd do the same thing again!

As with 2024, I'm going to take a quick look at the preexisting favourites who've particularly occupied my mind this year, and then I'm going to comb through my 'first impressions' tag and give my favourite character from each canon I first posted about in 2025. (If no favourite character comes to mind, I'll skip the canon.) I might also cover a couple of canons I've tried out this year but haven't yet posted about.

My favourite characters of 2025. )

Dexter is a surprising omission here! I watched a lot of that show earlier in the year, but I just don't have an answer to the 'who's your favourite character?' question. I like Deb, but not passionately enough to say with confidence that she's my favourite; I find Dexter interesting, but I can't say for certain whether I like him. I tend to be a very character-focused fan, so it's always a little surprising to me when I get into something without latching strongly on to any of the characters.

Ouagh...I am so sick. I woke up Thursday morning with sudden and substantial signs of infection in my right ear and my left ear basically going, hey, what’s that guy doing over there, is he having fun, I wanna have fun too! Things escalated rapidly. I went to Urgent Care Friday morning and got pills and drops both. I am maybe, sort of, just barely starting to see signs of improvement here on day 3 of treatment. I am absolutely obliterating my liver with the amount of Tylenol I’m choking down to manage the pain--it’s not even working well, to add insult to organ damage.

I have accomplished nothing. I am probably going to spend my whole vacation sick, and miserable, and simultaneously in bed at all hours but unable to actually sleep. I am deeply unhappy about this turn of events, but I feel too poorly to work up a proper level of outrage.

Mum was surprised and delighted by the books I got her and has been ravenously reading, so that’s fun. I have a new set of speakers for my computer, which I will enjoy eventually, and a new pillow, which I currently love more than life itself.

Rewrite-a-fic is a low-commitment, multi-fandom event dedicated to rewriting a fic you've written before!

The goal of this event is to rewrite something you've done before, a one-shot or a longer fic.

Event rules:
The work written has to be yours originally.
Original characters are allowed!
The fic you are rewriting has to be at least one and a half years old for it to be eligible to be rewritten.
The original fic can but doesn't have to already be posted somewhere for everyone to see. If you've never posted the original and don't want to do so, there is no pressure for that!
The length of the fanfic doesn't matter: it can be as long or as short as you want it to be! It doesn't have to match the word count of the original fic either!
There are no content restrictions! Just please use proper content warning when posting the work in the community!
Using generative AI to create a fic is strictly prohibited.
