I haven't been particularly active online since early October, owing to things like work and life and a bout of depression. But for the past few days, I haven't been particularly active in anything outside of my Switch because of the Animal Crossing update, especially the Happy Home Paradise DLC.

Oh gosh, this game is fun! Getting pretty much free rein to design villager homes without having to worry about crafting items or hunting down variations, and getting to see and interact with new (to me) villagers without having to say goodbye to my little island population, is perfect! I may be spending more time on the HHP DLC than the main game at the moment, but I'm still tending to my island and making sure none of my resident villagers feel neglected (I've built vacation homes for a few of them already, too!). ;)

Anyway, this update and DLC have been great mood-boosters, and I look forward to sinking quite a few more idle hours into them. :)

And of course I'm going to plaster screenshots on this blog! Was there ever any doubt? ;)

Lots of screenshots! )

I finally got around to redoing my villagers' yards and sprucing up a few areas on my island, and I'm ready to show it off! :)

The Halloween decor did it, which means it's going back to four stars after the holiday, but it's nice to know that I can reach five stars without changing the way I play. A nice little surprise this morning! :D

It's been far too long since I've shared any of my Animal Crossing pics! That means that I'm sharing way too many now. Mostly of villagers saying silly things.

Whew! So sorry for the screenshot-bomb. These little characters are just too adorable not to share (and now you know some of the nicknames they've given me ;) ). Thanks for your patience, and I'll try to keep the next update a bit leaner. :)

It's been a while since I've given an update on my Animal Crossing island. I'm still enjoying it, and slowly making it better and better.

Lots of pictures, under lots of cuts.

Guess who accidentally got herself a 4-star island?! )

And, to finish digesting the words of my earlier posts, I decided to get a tenth villager. I also decided I wanted to choose who that would be, so I bought Merry's Amiibo card. I still have to win her over with DIYs, but I'm ready to welcome her to OrangeLeaf!

Stuff.

No writing this week. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what is up with my creativity and motivation. They seem to come in surges, and each surge feels weaker than the last. :(

Oh, well. Enough of that, on to far too many pictures from my little virtual island!

My Animal Crossing island finally hit three stars! It took another villager (welcome, Fauna!), and some surreptitiously-placed fencing, but I did it. And what did I do with my newly-acquired Island Developer ability? I straightened one riverbank to put in another bridge. That's it, so far. I really like the wide-open feel of my island right now, so I'm holding off on making any drastic changes at the moment.

Also, summer fishing is amazing! Night owl that I am, I stayed up past midnight on Sunday, and, not half an hour into June, reeled in a whale shark. That was definitely a surprise. Now, my little villager is running along the beach for good chunks of the day, casting her line and stuffing sharks into her pocket. XD

Now, some screenshots from Last Week on OrangeLeaf! )

I've also met Reese and Cyrus and done their photo shoots. They are just precious; I swear, Reese must be made out of cotton candy! I'm still working on villagers' yards, and accumulating a lot of super-cute but highly impractical outfits from the Able Sisters. Since this post is getting pretty long already, I'll save my yard and "fashion" shots for another time.

I'll end with a cozy image -- tea and toast on a drizzly day. :)

I got several hundred words written this week, but I may just scrap them. More on that later. First, a little Animal Crossing.

Last week on OrangeLeaf (with pictures) )

Now, to the writing. Total words written this week: 689, but I'm not sure if they're good for anything. I continue to stagnate creatively, and even the asks I've received from a prompt meme on Tumblr aren't helping. When it comes to original fiction, I simply can't summon the energy to create characters and settings. And when it comes to fanfiction, I feel like I've forgotten who the characters are. This is troubling, considering how much I love some of them.

And then there is the vague sense of melancholy that seems to pervade all of my attempts, lately. For example, this past week I focused on trying to fill one of the Tumblr requests, which involves Rinoa, Laguna, and a funny little prompt. This should be, by virtue of the characters' personalities and the prompt, a silly, lighthearted story. Instead, I have a chilly, somber, half-finished rumination on memories, love, and familiarity, all centered on Julia.

I'm torn. I don't hate it; in fact, it's been an interesting topic to explore. But I'm not sure how in-character it is. I'm not sure where the FF8 characters end, and strange, random OCs begin. And considering Rinoa is one of my favorite video game characters, it's really frustrating that I can't seem to get a handle on her personality and motivations at the moment.

Furthermore, I'm not sure how well this story would be received, even if I managed to finish it -- you mention Laguna, and there are certain expectations (even though the murkier corners of his past, personality, and motivation make for some intriguing questions and headcanons). I wish I could write the silly little story this prompt demands, but it seems that right now, my creativity is sitting in a dark room with the curtains drawn, listening to dirges on a rusty old gramophone. Willingly.

I'll keep trying to haul myself out of this writing funk, but in the meantime, I have cutesy little animals to buoy my spirits, and a lovely little island make my own. Thank goodness for Animal Crossing! :)

What a difference a week makes. Last update, I was whining and stressing about Animal Crossing; now, I finally understand its charm. I have my seven villagers already, and, with a little bit of planning and quite a bit of tree-replanting, I have managed to fit them in without destroying the atmosphere of my island. In the past week, I've been delighted by my villagers' letters and conversations; expanded the museum and opened up the Able Sisters' shop; witnessed a meteor shower and met Celeste; met Leif and finally got some shrubbery; and joined in Olaf's birthday celebration! I had a slow and uncertain start with this game, but I'm thankful I stuck it out, because it's proven to be absolutely adorable (and the fishing -- and subsequent money-making -- is very addictive!).

I think my initial problem with the game was an issue of control. At the beginning, the player really doesn't have the resources necessary to shape the island to their particular vision. The first week or so is definitely a waiting game. But now that I have access to more tools, recipes, and services, as well as having gotten a feel for both the island and its residents, I feel far more confident that I can ultimately create the little island paradise I want. :) I'm both relieved at this realization, and very excited to move forward!

I'm not a patient person; I never have been. But this little game is doing its best to teach me how to slow down and wait, and during a time when that's pretty much all I can do in real life, anyway, this is a much more entertaining way to do it! :D
