A slightly more comprehensive retrospective than the one I posted earlier.Number of fics written10 (I used "Bracken and Fir" in last year's round-up)
FandomsTransistor, Final Fantasy VIII, and
The Blue Castle.
CategoriesGen, F/M, and F/F
Best titleAll the Light and Shadow of It (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney)
Worst title Queen of the Wild Places (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney). Not because it's bad, per se, but because I lifted it right out of the book. XP
Best first lineWhen he started to envy dead fish, he knew it was time for a drink. -
Gutted (Transistor, Auden & Mack Orthon)
Best last lineWith her, I have found my roots, at last. -
Queen of the Wild Places (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney)
Worst first lineHe should be happy, he knew. -
All the Light and Shadow of It (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney). It works in the context of the story, but as a standalone line, it's kind of dull.
Worst last lineBecause it did. -
All the Light and Shadow of It (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney). Again, this works better in context (come on, the preceding line is
To love her as if his own life depended on it.), but on its own, it's not spectacular. It's more of a punctuation mark underscoring everything that came before, if that makes sense.
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?Far, far fewer. This year was rough.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?Julia/Raine from FF8.
Flowers and Salt was the result of a prompt from the FF Kiss Battle, and it kind of took on a life of its own. >:3c
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. As I said in my earlier retrospective post, it's almost impossible to choose! But if I have to make that (painful) decision, I'll go with
Serendipity, or Just Dumb Luck (Transistor, Red/Auden). There's no combination quite so powerful as intense pining, UST, and slow-dancing. Except for maybe when all of that gets resolved. ;)
Okay, NOW your most popular storyBarring "Bracken and Fir" (see above), it's
Keep Reading (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney), with 48 kudos and 5 comment threads.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe?Gutted (Transistor, Auden & Mack Orthon). I understand why: it's gen, it features a semi-OC (Mack was a character cut from the game), and it's pretty depressing overall. But I'm still proud of the story I told, shining a light on characters that fell beneath Cloudbank's lofty notice.
Story that could have been better?I don't know. I'm pretty happy with how they all turned out.
Sexiest story?Well, in terms of smut, that's
Flowers and Salt (FF8, Julia/Raine).
Good (Transistor, Red/Auden) comes in a pretty close second, though not as explicit. In terms of that delicious, delicious sexual tension, it's
Serendipity, or Just Dumb Luck (Transistor, Red/Auden). And in terms of playful sexiness, it's
Keep Reading (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney).
Saddest story?Gutted (Transistor, Auden & Mack Orthon). Not necessarily in terms of tears, but there is no happy ending here.
Most fun?Good (Transistor, Red/Auden). >;3
Story with single sweetest moment? With Armor Spent (Transistor, Red/Auden). Red gently removing the handwraps from an exhausted Auden and reassuring him that, together, they are going to be okay.
Most fucked-up story?I didn't really go there, this year. But if you think about it, the politics and social structure of Cloudbank in
Gutted are definitely messed up.
Hardest story to write? With Armor Spent (Transistor, Red/Auden). It was hard to get the tone just right at the beginning.
Easiest/most fun story to write?Keep Reading (
The Blue Castle, Valancy/Barney). It was a fun little idea that just kind of came together on its own.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters? Not really.
Most overdue story? With Armor Spent (Transistor, Red/Auden). I had that bouncing around in my head for months.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?Nope, I played it pretty safe this year.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?Uh, to
actually write??? My creativity is still pretty strong, but I found it hard to focus on anything long enough to get words down this year. Hopefully, I can rediscover both my attention span and my confidence, and get some more fics out into the world. :)
