He squeezed her shoulder as he said goodnight, and her nerves lit up with the electric thought of how those hands might feel elsewhere—skimming her waist, sliding over her hips, gently parting her thighs, with his mouth never far behind, hot and tender, his words long since lost to hungry groans—and all she could do was lean back against the door as her knees melted, look into his eyes, and stupidly whisper, “You, too.”

Title: Morning (200 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: Teen and Up / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Red, Blue
Relationships: Red/Blue
Summary: Waking up in the arms of the man she loves, Red finds herself inspired.
Notes: Standalone sequel to "Good". Written for [community profile] drabble_zone (prompt: kiss and tell).

She can't control when inspiration strikes, though she can mildly curse it when it finds her sated and warm in the arms of the man she loves, the handwraps he hadn't taken the time to remove the night before deliciously rough against her skin. She extricates herself from his embrace slowly, careful not to wake him, then dresses and takes a seat at the desk across the room, where she tries to capture the feelings that tumble through her mind and her heart, in words that she may never share but cannot possibly contain.

Later, as the first rays of sun cascade through the window, she hears him stir. She listens as he dresses, unable to resist casting an appreciative glance over her shoulder. He doesn't notice; instead, he wordlessly goes into the kitchen and returns, minutes later, a steaming mug in each hand. He sets one down beside her and kisses her cheek.

"Morning," he says. "Inspiration struck fierce, huh?"

"You know you have that effect on me."

"What, last night?" He cocks an eyebrow and crooked grin. "Should I be worried?"

"Not at all." She leans back, smiles up at him, and winks. "I never kiss and tell."

Title: "Meritless Perspectives" (500 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Niola Chein, Grant Kendrell
Summary: An angry crowd disrupts the opening of the Goldwalk Channel, and Niola tries her best to keep her patience with them. When she finally snaps, a city official unexpectedly offers his support for her, as well as an enigmatic invitation.

The opening of Goldwalk Channel was supposed to be a celebration.  Inside the gallery, artists, most of whom had never had a say in the city's development and politics, stood, beaming, beside their creations and awaited the first visitors.

Outside, however, a different scene unfolded.  A vociferous group had gathered at the entrance to the Channel, pushing their way past visitors waiting to get in, and repeatedly reading a list of seventeen grievances through a megaphone.

Niola tried to ignore them at first, then tried to calmly address their grievances, but the group was less interested in understanding than they were in strong-arming the hours-old gallery out of existence.

Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Niola Chein, Wave Tennegan
Summary: The day before general election votes are due, Niola gives an interview on Wave Tennegan's radio show, explaining what her plan for Goldwalk Channel is, and how she hopes it will change Cloudbank for the better.

"Good morning, Cloudbank," Wave boomed into the microphone before him.  "It's 9:35 on a gorgeous Tuesday, and just a reminder: all votes for the general election must be cast before noon tomorrow.  Get to your nearest terminal and do your civic duty.

"If you remain undecided, maybe I can be of some help.  I've got the intrepid Niola Chein in the studio with me this morning, to talk about the proposal she has on the ballot, for something called the Goldwalk Channel.  Good morning, Niola; how are you?"

Niola smiled and leaned toward her microphone.  "Very well, thanks."

"So, Goldwalk Channel—what is it?  Can you give our listeners an idea of how it will benefit Cloudbank?"

"Certainly, Wave.  Goldwalk Channel will be a gallery space between Goldwalk Boulevard and Goldwalk Plaza, featuring art by those whose work and views are traditionally ignored in this city."

Title: "Precedent" (500 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Niola Chein, Bailey Gilande
Summary: Visiting the archives to find a precedent on which she might model the Goldwalk Channel, Niola finds an unexpected source of support for the project, instead.

Stepping into Bailey Gilande's office was like stepping into another world.  A large wooden desk stood in the corner of the room, in front of floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with books and binders and haphazardly stacked folders stuffed to bursting, remanants of a pre-digital age that Niola couldn't even fathom existing.

Bailey herself was small figure sitting behind a keyboard, dwarfed by both the desk and shelves, another stack of folders at her elbow.  A tiny owl perched on the green shade of a desk lamp and watched Niola's approach through enormous eyes.  Bailey looked up from her computer with the trace of a smile.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Chein," she said, motioning to the chair in front of the desk, "please, have a seat."

Niola blinked.  Bailey's stature belied her voice, which was rich, assured and velvety, a voice that both invited and inspired confidence.  Pity that she spoke so little.

Title: "Sky Looks Blue 'Cause We Want It To" (500 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Niola Chein, Farrah Yon-Dale
Summary: Ahead of the quarterly solstice celebration, Farrah runs her planned performance past Niola and the two decide to remind Cloudbank what beauty and passion look like, and that those qualities are accessible to everyone.

In the preview pane on the monitor, the sky glowed a dusty rose color, before flaring into blazing pink.  Colorful shapes began to rise from the horizon in all directions—blue and purple and green, lines and triangles and arabesques—then converged above Goldwalk, shifting and snaking around one another before coming together to form an abstract image.  Abstract, but lovely; so many images and subtexts could be parsed from it, Niola was sure, each differing with experience, context and mood.

"So, what do you think?" Farrah said, letting the preview fade to black.  "I call it 'Perspectives Through Time.'  It encapsulates how our ideas and conceptions change over time and with experience.  They grow, they merge, they...evolve."

"It's a beautiful piece," Niola replied, still looking at the monitor as if expecting something more.  "How long does it run?"

"About an hour, give or take.  I'll be drawing some extra images live."

"I'd err on the side of 'take,' if I were you. The Administrators have insisted that the new quarter start precisely on the second."

Title: "Advocate" (500 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Niola Chein
Summary: Niola is committed to achieving equality for all residents of Cloudbank, regardless of their socioeconomic status, and every little defiance against the status quo helps, even if it's just voting for another day of rain.

She knew he liked the rain.  She also knew he had no say in when it would fall.  Niola met Auden while collecting data on the disenfranchised in Cloudbank and quickly took a liking to him.  Hulking but affable, his observations on the city and life in general betrayed an inquisitiveness and intelligence that would have landed him a decent career had he had the opportunity to develop them.  Instead, he was part of a legion of Cloudbank inhabitants that, while doing much of the minute, often dirty, tasks to keep the city running smoothly, were not afforded the benefits of citizenship.

Niola was horrified to discover there were so many.

Title: "Seconds March into Silence" (200 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Red, Blue
Relationships: Red/Blue
Summary: When the Process begins to affect Auden inside the Transistor, Red seeks to comfort him with her song. But what he sings back to her breaks her heart.
Notes: Cross-posted to [community profile] drabble_zone

Auden may have lost his body, but Red was grateful to still have his voice. It anchored her in the nightmare unfolding around her, reassuring, encouraging, affectionate. Though she couldn't respond to him, his words enveloped her, the next best things to his arms.

Then the Process took that, too. Whatever that large creature was, it affected Auden inside the Transistor, leaving him a confused mess, pivoting between weak jokes, sappy declarations, and outright resignation seemingly at random. She could feel him slipping away, and, in a desperate moment, she pulled the Transistor close and began to hum to him.

"When you speak, I hear silence," he lisped along. A leaden dread settled in Red's stomach, and she stopped humming and opened her eyes.

"Whassamatter?" he slurred. "I mess up?"

She swallowed hard and nodded, tears threatening to spill over.

"Wrong key?"

Another nod.

"Oh. Sorry. I'll do better next time."

She faked a smile. She didn't have the heart to tell him it was the wrong song. How could he forget "Paper Boats?"

She adjusted her grip on the Transistor and pressed onward, determined to find whatever caused this and break its heart.

Just like it had broken hers.

Even as my Chocolate Box assignment languishes in the hot mess of a rough draft, I took a little time to crank out a few fics for the 3-Sentence Ficathon.

Witness my wanton abuse of semicolons and em dashes!

Where There Are Those Who Have No Voice, There I Shall Go Singing (FF8, Rinoa) - Rinoa rejects her father's complacency at the state of the world.

A Dozen Roses in the Night (FF6, Setzer/Daryl) - It was Setzer's biggest gamble yet, wooing an unconventional woman with a bouquet of roses. It paid off in spades.

A Dubious Honor (Transistor, Royce) - Royce didn't ask to have the buildings named after him. He pretended it didn't bother him, but every time Bracket Towers was updated or redesigned, it felt like a personal attack.

This was fun, and I'm looking forward to participating more after I finish my assignment.

AND there's the FF Kiss Battle going on, as well!  Hopefully, this will kick my writing habit into gear!

Title: "What's So Great About Sunshine" (200 words)
Fandom: Transistor
Character: Red, Blue
Rating/Warning: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Summary: Predictable weather and a predictable public leave them both feeling trapped and alone, unaware of each other and what they have in common. (Pre-canon, pre-meeting).
Notes: Cross-posted to [community profile] drabble_zone

Auden knows that he has lost again, even before he opens his eyes and sees the sunlight streaming through his apartment's ill-fitting blinds.

It has taunted him daily for months, now, no matter what buttons he presses on the terminals around town. It's there, jabbing spears into his brain whenever he's hungover; it's there, shining on injuries from hard-fought bouts. It's there today, reminding him that, in a city where, supposedly, everyone has a voice, his is never heard.

He gets up, grumbling and shielding his eyes, desperate for a change in the weather, wondering what's so great about sunshine.

***

Red looks out her window at the blue sky overhead, but she doesn't feel much like smiling.

She's given her fans what they want, happily; but want about what she wants? She doesn't necessarily mind writing and singing pleasant songs, but life is more than flowers and sunshine, especially in Cloudbank, where the city's ideals depend on compliance, on the many becoming one, in thought and in action.

She sighs, knowing she can't yet say what she feels, for nobody's ready to listen. She can only wait for a change in the weather, and wonder what's so great about sunshine.

Title: "Gold on Black Velvet" (663 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Characters: Red, Blue

Summary: Red discovers a small velvet box in the pocket of Auden's jacket, and answers the question he never got to properly ask.

Red's eyebrows rose, and Auden watched curiosity displace determination in her eyes as she slowed her pace and eventually stopped running.

"Why are we stopping?" he asked. "You okay, Red? You're not hurt, are you?"

She shook her head, then shifted the Transistor to her left hand while she reached into his jacket pocket with her right. Inside the Transistor, the blue wheat-like stalks around him swayed with the motion, and he craned his neck to watch her, though he knew exactly what she would find.

He could see in her expression the moment her fingertips brushed against the little velvet box in his pocket, and he felt what was left of his heart break in tandem with hers.

Fandom: Transistor
Characters/Pairings: Royce Bracket, Grant Kendrell
Word Count: 100
Rating: G
Summary: Royce watches another of his projects get "updated."
Notes: Cross-posted from [community profile] 31_days.

Royce and Grant stood on the roof of Bracket Towers, their faces awash with the glow of the digital landscape before them. Somewhere below, a clock struck midnight, and a building in the distance flickered green and black, enveloped in a haze of barely-perceptible zeroes and ones, before changing its form, pilasters becoming steel beams, bricks becoming plate glass.

Royce stubbed out his cigarette on the railing. "Cloudbank, thy will be done," he said, borrowing a phrase he couldn't recall learning.

"Don't worry," Grant replied. "Soon, their will shall match ours."

"Indeed," Royce sighed. "But not soon enough for me."

Title: "Waking Up in the Country" (100 words)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Transistor
Rating/Warnings: General Audiences / No Warnings Apply
Character: Farrah Yon-Dale
Summary: In her capacity as a skypainter, Farrah worked with every color she could imagine. The colors outside of Cloudbank, however, went far beyond that.
Notes:Cross-posted from [community profile] 100words

She'd painted the sunsets, once. She'd created enchanting romantic evenings, tranquil morning skies, blazing orange solstices. Whatever the people asked of her, she delivered, with grace, with passion, with every color imaginable at her fingertips.

But Farrah could never have dreamed up the colors she saw when she opened her eyes now. The gold of the wheat that tickled her skin, the endless blue spreading overhead, the weather-beaten red of a building far away.

These colors filled her heart, and broke it; she instinctively knew they were not hers to touch, or control. Alien, unknowable – yet, somehow, deeply, achingly, familiar.
