I spent last night on a dry lake bed in the middle of the Mojave Desert launching lanterns into the sky. I love this festival; there's just something so intensely emotional about the beauty of gently rising lights. People are encouraged to write and draw on the lanterns, especially messages to loved ones no longer with us, and I noticed something very lovely on the way back to the parking lot: numerous lanterns had blown out and drifted down over the lake bed, but all of them were blank and gray, meaning that even though the lanterns come back down, the ink, and all of the pictures and words and tributes written in it, burn off with the heat from the flame and are carried up into the night sky, among the stars.

I did manage to get a few pictures of the lantern launch, but (surprise, surprise!) cheap phone takes crappy pictures. Just ignore all the noise and focus on the pretty lights. :)

(The lanterns are made of biodegradable material, and those that fall in the event area are cleaned up by staff at the end of the night.)
