Walter had never traveled to a place without a receiving teleportation pod, and rather than materializing in a sleek, sterile chamber, he found himself falling from a considerable height to the dirt below.  He landed on his feet with a puff of dust and was immediately accosted by a barrage of unfamiliar sounds and smells.  He shook his head and scrambled backwards into Gary, who looked down at him with an exasperated sigh.

"What's wrong?" Gary asked, his coarse tones chafing Walter's ears.  Walter tried to voice his displeasure, but it came out in an odd, wordless sound.

::What's this?::  he asked.  ::You get to talk, and I don't?::

"I couldn't trust you not to blow our cover, so I made you a cat."

::A cat.::

"A common domestic animal of Earth, northwest quadrant."

::Domestic?  I'm a pet?::

"Yes."

Walter snorted, then began to examine his body.  This cat creature walked on four legs, compared to Gary's two, and was covered with a coat of fine hair, which Walter didn't mind.  What he did mind were the soft rounded feet, hardly fit for defending himself, let alone Gary, should trouble arise.  He raised a paw toward Gary.

::How am I supposed to do my job?  I have insufficient phalangeal appendages!::

"You have toes," Gary said, kneeling beside him.  He grabbed Walter's paw and pressed the large pad on the bottom.  Walter's muscles contracted, and an array of claws shot out.

Walter's eyes widened.  ::Built-in blades!  Amazing!  Do they work on flesh?::  He swiped at Gary's arm, drawing blood.

"Walter!"

::I have to know what I'm working with.::

Gary groaned, then rose and walked toward an ungainly-looking vehicle nearby.  He opened the door and motioned Walter inside.  "This," he said, starting the cacophonous engine, "is our ride.  We're Earthlings, beginning now."
