7. A thing you made in a frenzy.
I can't recall having made anything in an actual frenzy, but I know that I do tend to draft short, smutty pieces more quickly than I do other stories, simply because overthinking that kind of subject matter ultimately does it no favors. In that respect, I think Good (Transistor, Red/Blue, rated E) tumbled out fairly quickly, just flowing on from the opening line to what I felt was the scene's natural end.
8. A thing you're currently still making
Ha. Hahahahahaha. TOO MANY WIPS! But in the spirit of this event, I'll pick one: "Crystal Mind and Magenta Feelings." (Sorry, no chick-a cherry cola.)
Some backstory: Years ago, I tried writing a story about Selphie's pre-Balamb Garden days, titled "Mercy." In it, I intended to introduce the GF that Selphie offhandedly mentions finding during a training mission in Trabia, and explore Selphie's relationship to that GF. I had named that GF Eir (Old Norse for "mercy"), and envisioned it as a Mesmerize with a significant glow-up.
Now, in "Crystal Mind and Magenta Feelings": About a year after the events of the game, Quistis finds herself addicted to GF usage because the memory-loss side effects help her to forget her failed adoption and the personal issues that arose from that. In what amounts to an intervention, Squall and Xu send Quistis to Trabia Garden to help Selphie with the restoration there and hopefully wean Quistis off of GFs entirely. Unfortunately, that's one of the subjects Selphie almost immediately brings up, and as she and Quistis talk about them, Selphie reminisces about her first GF. Quistis asks if Trabia Garden kept any records on that, and Selphie, taking advantage of the chaos of construction, sneaks into a makeshift office to find her files. She locates them, but no mention of her first GF, or of that training mission at all.
More curious than ever, Selphie raids Trabia Garden's emergency GF supply and junctions Quetzalcoatl, in a hope to find the GF's trace in her own mind. Quetz is able to locate it and identifies it as Eir, but because Eir had been so suddenly and violently removed from Selphie's mind, it reacts to Quetz's presence with fear and burrows deeper into Selphie's memories, and before Selphie can unjunction Quetzalcoatl, Eir's trace breaks from the stress.
When that happens, the fragments of Eir release their hold on Selphie's earliest memories, inundating her mind with flashbacks. Quistis junctions Quetzalcoatl to learn that Selphie will continue to reject junctions until Eir is removed completely, and, unfortunately, it needs to be complete to be unjunctioned, similar to how computer programs need certain files to complete an uninstall.
Further unfortunately for all of them, nobody knows where Eir is, other than somewhere on the Trabian snowfields. So Quisty and Selphie set out to find Eir, Selphie all the while suffering flashbacks and complaining about the cold and growing weaker by the day. If they don’t find Eir? Selphie may never be the same again.
9. A thing that you always look back to
"Dusty Boots," a little "article" I wrote for Timblr Maniacs, a blog that reimagined what kind of content one might have found in the old Timber Maniacs magazines from FF8. This blog collected in-universe articles, advertisements, and features of the FF8 world, and was an absolute blast to read and write for! Other than this piece, I have several others over there, and everybody's contributions were so wonderful and fun! It's a shame it didn't really take off with the FF8 fandom; I would love to see a project like this start up again, maybe even in an actual zine format.
