I've seen this meme floating around on my Network page, by different users. I believe it was originally yoinked from Mastodon, and I suppose it's okay if I nick it for my own entertainment. Anyway, twenty fannish questions!

1. How long have you been in fandom?

This depends on how you define "fandom." If you mean having a fannish space of my own, then it's only been 5 years. If you mean participating in a fan community (e.g. forums and stuff), then it's been about 20 years. If you mean dabbling in fanworks (before I even recognized them as such), it would be 27 years. Oof, I'm getting old! XD

2. Which fandoms are you in now?

(Gonna get nitpicky here.) I'm currently creating fanwork for Transistor and The Blue Castle, as well as Final Fantasies 6, 8, and 10. But I really don't feel like I'm in the fandoms for these properities, in so far that they actually have fandoms. I enjoy the art and the fic, but there's no real sense of community around any of these, so I'm not sure how the term "fandom" really applies, other than in a generalized sense.

3. Do you create transformative works (fic, fan art, podfic, etc.)?

Yep! Mostly fanfic, though I dabble in fanart from time to time, when the mood strikes.

4. What was your first fandom?

The first property that I got deeply involved in was Illusion of Gaia for the SNES. I'm not sure what about it hooked me, but it reeled me in very quickly, to the point where I, in my junior-high hubris, decided to adapt it into a stage play (copyright laws be damned), and devoted a whole summer to the project before realizing it was just too much for a kid to pull off.

5. How often has fic made you cry?

I cry easily, but I also tend to avoid things I know will make me sad. That said, crying while reading fic is not a rare occurence for me.

6. Rec a fic that you love!

Drinks with Friends by Toushindai for that glorious, glorious sexual tension.

(And if that tension's a little too much, the follow-up, Capriccio, does a damn good job relieving it. ;) )

7. Who's your ult OTP?

Valancy/Barney from The Blue Castle and Red/Blue (Boxer) from Transistor are currently tied for that top spot. Though the specifics of these two ships are vastly different, I believe they share a similar dynamic.

8. Share a pic that would convince someone to fall for your current fandom!

Picture by Andrea Arbeteta. Click to enlarge.

From The Blue Castle: Valancy and Barney sitting on their veranda in the evening, overlooking Lake Mistawis. I just love the peaceful atmosphere of this picture, and how it captures the warmth and comfort of their life together.

9. Have you ever met a fandom friend IRL?

Nope.

10. What's the last fandom merch or craft you got?

I have to admit, I hardly ever buy fandom merch. ^^; It can get pretty expensive. The last fannish thing I bought was the Pinny Arcade Red (Transistor) pin. I pinned it to my purse, the backing came loose, and poor Red was lost in some scorching parking lot somewhere. ToT I've been meaning to replace it, but I haven't yet.

11. Rare pairs, big ships, or gen?

Um...all of the above? When I started writing fic, I was primarily a gen writer, and there are so many wonderful stories to be told and read that don't feature romance at all. For the fandoms I dabble in, I also don't mind most of the main ships, except for Celes/Locke from FF6. But some of my favorite ships are rarepairs (Daryl/Setzer, Quistis/Rinoa, Auron/Lulu), and I love to write and read about these, too!

12. Are you multi-fandom or mono-fannish?

Multi-fandom. Though I was pretty mono-fannish about FF8 when I first started my Tumblr and fic archives.

13. When did you last travel for a con, concert, fanmeet, or cupsleeve event?

I think the only time I've traveled for anything fannish was when I went to the first Dear Friends concert in LA in...2004? Yikes, has it been that long already?!

14. How did you get into your current fandom?

My newest fandom is The Blue Castle, a novel written by L.M. Montgomery. I got into it by seeing posts of the Blue Castle comic on Tumblr pop up on my dash. I got curious, checked out the book, and the rest is (relatively recent) history.

15. What's your favorite trope?

Friends-to-lovers, hands down. I just love to see the slow deepening of feelings between two people who already like one another and are comfortable in each other's presence.

16. What are 3 tags that will make you click no matter what?

- The aforementioned "Friends-to-lovers"
- "Mutual pining"
- "Sexual tension" (resolved or not)

17. Fav fest you've prompted/read/written for?

[community profile] press_start_comm - An exchange for video game fandoms, which make up nearly all of mine.

I also did my first [community profile] highadrenalineexchange this year, and loved what it drove me to create. Whether I participate in this or the other of the Big Three again will be dependent on circumstances at the time, but I really appreciated the challenge.

18. Share an upcoming fest you're excited about!

Well, since the only challenge I have coming up right now is [community profile] rarepairexchange, I suppose I damn well better be excited about it! XD

19. What's your favorite episode, song, moment, etc. from your current fandom?

The first scene that sprang to mind was Barney and Valancy getting stranded in the woods after his car runs out of gas (and this is after he rescued her from a dance that was getting too rowdy!). The tiny ripples of tension you can feel between them, and the quiet companionship they offer one another in the dark, are so lovely. And then when they are found by none other than Valancy's judgemental uncle and cousin, it is such a delight to see the relatives' reactions! It's just a sweet little scene that also happens to be loaded with meaning, especially for Valancy.

20. Tag three fandom friends!

Or, how about just anyone who wants to do this? Go right ahead! :D

I, in my junior-high hubris, decided to adapt it into a stage play (copyright laws be damned), and devoted a whole summer to the project before realizing it was just too much for a kid to pull off.

I love this! I'm delighted to know other kids also attempted impossibly ambitious fannish projects. Before we knew what fanfiction was, a primary-school friend and I were determined to create a crossover fan film called Harry Potter and the Double Act Twins, in which Ruby and Garnet, the twins from Jacqueline Wilson's Double Act, went to Hogwarts.

I think I still have my handwritten planning notes somewhere. I was thinking we could get owls from bird sanctuaries for the film, but I couldn't spell 'sanctuaries', so what I actually wrote was 'bird sancuo places'. The plan for Quidditch was 'Players sit on brooms suspended by springy wires. They will easily be able to swing round'. There was an illustration, but the illustration didn't show exactly what the brooms were to be suspended from.

Oh I love all of this! (gonna need to swipe this and do for myself too~) Thanks so much for sharing your fannish insights 💕

That's SO COOL you went to the original Dear Friends concert!!!! And I love that one Red Pinny Arcade pin - I hope you can replace her soon 🥺 have you seen the figure of Red that Supergiant Games put out? I don't know if they're still available but it's a solid figure and not too pricy or massive.
