Welcome to my journal, which is mostly dedicated to writing about writing, with some blathering personal posts sprinkled in for good measure. I write both fanfiction and original stories, and the occasional poem, when the mood strikes.

I'm Dee (she/her, older than I act). I squee and I write, not necessarily in that order, and usually about older/smaller video games, though the occasional book or other piece of media slips in from time to time. I've been writing for most of my life (my mother still has the first "book" I made, "Flash the Fish", written and illustrated when I was in kindergarten), and it's really been one of the few constants through the years. I love to learn; I'm intensely curious and am always collecting little snips of stuff here and there that may one day grow into stories of their own.

I didn't become active in fandom until a few years ago, when I started writing fanfic for Final Fantasy VIII. FF8 remains one of my main fandoms, along with Final Fantasies VI and X; Transistor; and the novel, The Blue Castle, by L.M. Montgomery.

Favorite characters: Rinoa (FF8), Relm (FF6), Red and Blue|Boxer (Transistor), Valancy and Barney (The Blue Castle)

Favorite ships: Red/Blue, Barney/Valancy, Setzer/Daryl (FF6), Auron/Lulu (FFX), Rinoa/Quistis, Rinoa/Squall

Favorite fics I've written for each fandom:

We Are Cinders from a Fire Burning Long Ago

FF8:
Until I Burn Away
Same Old Song, Just Once More

FFX:
Easy Silence

Transistor:
Noise
Gold on Black Velvet
In Your Blood

The Blue Castle:

And a few fic recs for these fandoms:

FFX:

Helping a Friend, by Postal_Ninja

Transistor:

Final Fantasy VI

That Nebulous Thing Called Love (Celes, Terra; rated G) - Celes encounters a very different Terra in Mobliz than the one she thought she knew. Frustrated by Terra's unwillingness to fight, Celes ponders the reason behind it, and her own interpretation of love, and is eventually moved toward understanding by an innocent gesture in the dead of night.

Butterflies (Relm; rated G) - Relm tests the limits of her magic.

As the Moon Chases the Sun (Celes & Terra; rated T) - Growing up in Terra's shadow, Celes had come to hate her...until she actually met her. Perplexed by Terra's mix of childish naivete and innate power, Celes finds herself drawn closer to her and the warmth she radiates, and through the passage of time and loss of memories, their paths continue to cross.

A Dozen Roses in the Night (Setzer/Daryl; rated T) - It was Setzer's biggest gamble yet, wooing an unconventional woman with a bouquet of roses. And it paid off in spades.

Shake the Stars from the Sky (Setzer/Daryl; rated E - After leaving a fancy Jidoorian party, Setzer and Daryl can't agree on where to head to next, so they devise a very physical challenge to break the stalemate. [ORPHANED]

Famous Red Overcoat (Setzer/Daryl; rated T) - It was a simple dalliance, the kind to which neither of them was a stranger. So why does she still haunt his heart, and why does he make her want to give her heart away?

Family Portrait (Relm; rated G) - A year after helping the others defeat Kefka, Relm is frustrated that her paintings can no longer come to life in a world without magic. In a fit of anger, she knocks one of Strago's pictures off the wall, shattering the frame and revealing a painting of a family who looks all too familiar.

We Are Cinders From a Fire Burning Long Ago (Celes/Terra; rated M) - In the four years since Kefka's defeat, Celes' body has adjusted to the lack of magic in the world, but she still feels the emptiness in her bones where it used to be. Having taken up a job as mercenary, she tries to find her place in a world that no longer seems to have a use for her.

Meanwhile, Terra watches Mobliz rebuild and repopulate, and many of the children in her care are adopted out to new families. She knows that this is the ideal outcome for the children, but she can't help but worry: if her love for the children is what kept her in this world, what would happen should the children forget about her?

Reunited during one of Celes' missions, Celes and Terra head back to South Figaro, where they both accept mercenary assignments for a living. When Setzer visits them with an offer to act as guides and guards for a group of adventurers scavenging the ruins of Kefka's Tower, Celes and Terra find a remnant of a bygone time that will force them to admit their fears and test their will to push forward.

Final Fantasy VIII

Affirmation (Squall/Rinoa; rated G) - Years later, though the world has changed and their priorities have shifted, their commitment remains, reaffirmed and strengthened as the days pass, through the small moments. Fear doesn’t necessitate hiding, and a knight doesn’t always need a weapon.

The Girl with Flaming Hair (Adel; rated G) - A betrayal in her youth drives Adel's thirst for power in her present, and the fire within her is only fueled by the unintended side effects of Dr. Odine's experiments.

Special Order (Quistis, Selphie, Rinoa; rated G) - [Bakery AU] It’s only been two years since Quistis opened Qake, a boutique bakery in Dollet. But with the development of a megaresort nearby, business at the bakery has slowed down considerably, and Quistis’ livelihood is in danger. The arrival of a quirky, energetic heiress in town might just turn things around – if she doesn’t drive Quistis crazy first!

Curious as a Cat (Esthar Chronicles 1) (Quistis; rated T) - For much of her life, Quistis hasn’t been particularly inquisitive. But an unusual sighting on the skyways of Esthar rekindles her curiosity and leads to an encounter that renews her sense of purpose and passion for knowledge, and just might help her find her place in the world. [CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE]

Property of Odine Laboratories (Esthar Chronicles 2) (Irvine, Quistis; rated T) - A mix-up at the Esthar shopping mall leaves Irvine in possession of some very unusual ammunition. Though it is clearly marked as belonging to Odine Laboratories and still in trials, Irvine can’t resist trying it out, with very unpleasant consequences – for himself and everyone around him. [CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE]

Where I Belong (Esthar Chronicles 3) (Selphie, OCs; rated G) - While studying the history and manufacture of Estharian aircraft, Selphie comes across her own name in an article about a deadly revolt in a mining town, not long after the overthrow of Adel. While struggling to understand and help a child too young to completely grasp the meaning of what has happened to her, Raine begins having strange, eerily realistic dreams – dreams that Ellone claims to share.

Over and Over (Winhill flower shop owner; rated G) - For nearly twenty years, the owner of the Winhill flower shop has held onto a hope she couldn’t really believe. But after seeing a loved one in the eyes of a stranger and sharing her story with a friend, that hope no longer seems so far-fetched.

Irvine’s assignment: seduce the suspect to facilitate arrest. His reputation and a SeeD mission on the line, can Irvine live up to his claims of being a “ladies’ man”? [CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE]

Ozone (Zell; rated G) - From a young age, Zell has been fascinated by lightning, by its spectacle and power. Though the details have faded as he’s grown, his fascination remains, and his search for the power to protect his loved ones allies him with the storm itself, bringing back a familiar scent, and memories he can’t quite recall.

Evening Edition (Quistis; rated G) - [Newsroom AU] Quistis has worked as an anchor at BalambNine News for five years, when a brash new co-anchor forces her to the periphery of the news desk. She weathers her frustration as best as she can, until an international development offers her a chance to do the job she loves and reclaim her well-earned position in the process.

Snapshots (Rinoa, Laguna; rated G) - At least once in every conversation with Rinoa, Laguna brought up Julia. But the Julia he knew was not her mother; Laguna's Julia was nothing more than a snapshot, an idol, a sliver of a whole and vibrant woman.

40-Love (FF8 cast; rated G) - A chance event and an impulsive decision lead Rinoa to the Balamb Gardens Tennis Club, where she meets a colorful group of people and learns to love the sport she was forced to practice as a child. When a string of injuries plagues the competetive squad before a tournament, Rinoa steps in to help, and finds herself paired with a surly singles specialist who seems as though he'd rather be anywhere than on the court with her. The two of them will need to learn to work together to stand a chance at winning, and maybe even learn to understand each other along the way. [IN-PROGRESS] [CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE]

Crystal-Clear Snafu (Selphie, Zell; rated G) - When Selphie hears about a new fuel source Esthar is developing, using Energy Crystals, she heads into the still-unstable Trabian Crater, for a little excavation of her own.

Take You in My Arms and Fly Away with You Tonight (Squall/Rinoa; rated T) - Squall can't shake the glimpse of future he received in Ultimecia's time, and sees her shadows even in the present. Even around Rinoa, even as Rinoa wants nothing more than to pull him into the light with her, to gain and retain his trust.

Party People (Selphie, Wimbly; rated G) - Selphie has just finished hosting Balamb Garden's first-ever Garden Festival. During clean-up, she finally meets her predecessor from the Garden Festival committee, come to congratulate her on her success. He certainly knows how to make an impression.

Civilian (Rinoa/Squall; rated G) - That first GF opened the floodgates to the magic that runs through Rinoa's body, to the power that's slowly consuming her. Though Squall regrets having given it to her, a civilian with no training and no business using GFs, the decision made perfect sense at the time: Rinoa wanted to fight beside SeeD. It was her choice; what right did he have to object?

Take Me Where the Streetlights Glow (Rinoa/Quistis; rated E) - Quistis hasn't taken a proper vacation in years. Now, four years after meeting Rinoa and saving the world, she travels with her to Dollet for a week of relaxation and indulgence. And if Quistis hasn't learned how to properly enjoy those things by now, Rinoa is only too happy to help her out. [ORPHANED]

Roll to Me (Rinoa/Quistis; rated T) - Rinoa surprises Quistis with a getaway to Deling City for her birthday, intent on showing her the kind of weekend she'd dreamed of having while growing up in Caraway's mansion--hip restaurants, cool clubs, and dancing until dawn. But when they get lost on the way to one of those clubs and end up at a roller disco, instead, Rinoa remembers that it's not the venue that makes an evening memorable, but who you share the evening with.

To Last Voyages and New Experiences (Selphie/Nida; rated G) - Nida had long accepted the eventuality of the last voyage of Balamb Garden, but he didn't expect to share the final leg of that journey with anyone, much less someone who takes him seriously--as a SeeD, a pilot, and a person.

Flowers and Salt (Julia/Raine; rated E) - Tired of the noise and stress of the city, Julia escapes to Winhill for the weekend, where she has an unexpected fling with the local pub owner.

The Next Blank Page (Lulu, Yuna; rated G) - A year after helping Yuna defeat Yu Yevon, Lulu feels adrift in the world, in her own life. But a late-night conversation with Yuna and a carelessly dropped sphere plant the seeds of a new dream, and the courage to follow it.

Noise (Blue, OCs; rated T) - The cheers and applause from Red's audience were deafening, drowning out all other sounds around Auden, and coaxing back a memory from his fighting days that he would rather forget.

In Your Blood (Red, Blue; rated G) - Auden had been working as Red’s personal security detail for two months now, and she still knew precious little about him beyond his name and where he came from. Perhaps it was time to learn a little bit more.

Presentable (Sybil, Royce; rated G) - Sybil tries to make Royce presentable for a Cloudbank function, but he is not particularly cooperative.

Bodyguard (Sybil, Red, Blue; rated G) - Red has usually been forthcoming with Sybil, but a period of relative reticence leaves Sybil feeling left out of her life–a feeling that only intensifies when she meets Red’s new bodyguard.

Provocatrice (Sybil, Red; rated G) - A “special occasion” turns out to be a special person, and a clear indicator of where Sybil stands in Red’s life. Sequel to “Let the Rain Fall”.

Waking Up in the Country (Farrah; rated G) - In her capacity as a skypainter, Farrah worked with every color she could imagine. The colors outside of Cloudbank, however, went far beyond that.

Advocate (Niola; rated G) - Niola is committed to achieving equality for all residents of Cloudbank, regardless of their socioeconomic status, and every little defiance against the status quo helps, even if it's just voting for another day of rain.

Lacuna (Niola, Wave; rated G) - The day before general election votes are due, Niola gives an interview on Wave Tennegan's radio show, explaining what her plan for Goldwalk Channel is, and how she hopes it will change Cloudbank for the better.

Meritless Perspectives (Niola, Grant; rated G) - An angry crowd disrupts the opening of the Goldwalk Channel, and Niola tries her best to keep her patience with them. When she finally snaps, a city official unexpectedly offers his support for her, as well as an enigmatic invitation.

Gutted (Blue, Mack Orthon; rated M) - Auden runs into an old friend at the bar, a mechanic who just lost his livelihood to a vote he couldn't even participate in.

With Armor Spent (Red/Blue; rated G) - After weathering an over-enthusiastic crowd at the Halcyon Street stage, both Red and Auden are unnerved by the memories that resurface, though Auden refuses to disclose the specifics, leaving Red unable to do anything for him but remain by his side, and remind him that together, they are going to be all right.

Serendipity, or Just Dumb Luck (Red/Blue; rated T) - Having revealed that she doesn't know how to dance, Red asks Auden to teach her. It's a simple request, but the longing looks and gentle touches and unavoidable proximity that come with it give rise to feelings that are anything but.

At least, not until he saw the little boxes of chocolates in the window of the confectionery and decided then and there that Valancy simply must have one--as a friendly gift, a token of appreciation, nothing more. Definitely nothing more.

Short Stories

Hook and Net and Twenty Men - Rose bears people's deathbed confessions out to sea, letting them pull her beneath the waves. Her sister Marie brings her back each time. And so it has gone, and continues to go, for years, each woman's power trapping them in this cycle. But, powerful as they are, they are only human, too, and the weight of others' sins is a wearisome burden to bear.

Decree - The silence had begun gradually — several fewer voices lifted in praise to the gods, a smaller pile of offerings at the altar. And when, at last, the altar is left bare and cold, the goddess Ephine crosses to the mortal world to investigate, and finds the cause is one man's decree.

Hunter - Growing up with two sisters with powerful abilities, Reginald discovered his was in the hunt. His successes, however, lead to cockiness and selfishness, and eventually, to a curse even he is unable to outrun. (Prequel to "Hook and Net and Twenty Men")

The Archivist - Growing up in the sterile confines of a generation ship, Pris has little sentimentality for items of the past, until an archivist shows her a recording of life on Earth, and she is drawn to the images in sounds by an innate longing for a place she never knew – one she could not return to, one she would never reach.

Soulmate - Like two puzzle pieces, painted very differently – though the pieces fit, just barely, the design they create makes no sense at all

Siren - He really did have lovely eyes. Honest eyes. Hopeful eyes. Eyes that took in the graceless mess of humanity and still found qualities to admire. She wouldn't mind seeing the world through those eyes, if only for a little while.

Bet My Life - A hyperbolic figure of speech is taken a bit too literally.

Cottonwood Bride - A desperate mother makes an unusual decision, for her daughter's survival and happiness, and all is well for a span of ages. But time brings change, and another important decision, one spurred by the slow, creeping tendrils of human civilization.

The Door - The door appeared once every five hundred years, high on the wall of an icy cavern, and it remained for only one night. Gidren was determined to reach it first, no matter the cost.

The Eulogist - She had a way with words, right up to the very end.

The Stranger - Mrs. Baker did not appreciate the knowledge that a stranger was buried on her property. Especially when the land refused to accept him.

The Visitor - A stranger blows into town with an uncharacteristic snowstorm, and leaves with a relic that might change the state of the world forever.

The Spellcaster's Wife - The widow of a vain magician makes her living selling potions of instant gratification that never turn out the way the purchaser hopes. She also sells the antidote to their troubles, but few would take a sip of the dark and curdled brew, no matter its promise of salvation.

Hero - Everyone wants a hero, needs a hero, loves a hero, but the hero has no freedom to want and need and love in return.

What a Nuisance, What a Waste - The terms of the covenant had been clear, and back then, she’d eagerly accepted them: three years as a woman, to live among and learn from the people in the valley below her home. Three years to laugh and dance and sing; three years to ache and cry and want. Three years to touch the ground, feel the sunlight, revel in all the thoughts and sensations denied to her in her divine state, before returning, theoretically sated, to devote herself to her everlasting work once more.

But three years, while a snap of the fingers to the gods, was a long time for a human. A long time to experience all that she had desired, and a long time to learn to desire more. For while she laughed and danced and sang, and ached and cried and wanted more than she thought possible, she also fell in love.

Like Sunlight on a Day-blooming Flower - When bookshop owner Vivian Drake gets caught in a downpour, florist Lula Fuentes comes to the rescue with an umbrella. Lula's bright personality begins to thaw Vivian's more reserved nature, and she decides that if she wants to find out if Lula feels the same, she's going to have to make the first move.

Drown My Soul in Sensory Pleasure - It had long been considered a pirate's death wish to seek out the treasure of Captain Gullbasher Finch, whose ship disappeared off the coast of an island he had freshly plundered, but Captain Ravosa is up to the challenge. Hearing that sirens attacked the last crew who went in search of the treasure, Capt. Ravosa presses forward, confident that she can resist the sirens' charms.

When she arrives at the island, however, she finds no sirens, but instead, a mermaid named Ipthia, who is willing to exchange her share of the treasure for three things from Capt. Ravosa daily: a story, an item, and the chance to explore her body. Capt. Ravosa agrees, believing that by focusing on the treasure, she will be immune to Ipthia's charm and curiosity. But perhaps the good captain is overestimating her self-control.

Oh man, that ending. I remember a lot of people had gone into it thinking it would be like Bastion, where you could choose what you'd do in the end, but the sucker punch of having no say in it was really well executed. I love that it's 100% what Red wants to do and not what you the player want. Because it is her story, after all. Ahhhh I'm tearing up just thinking about it!

My Transistor drabble series is here and all my Transistor fics in general are here. :D And if you'd like recs for other Transistor fics, here you go!

I can't wait to hear your musings when you dive into Bastion and/or Pyre :D and if you're ever looking for recs for games, let me know! I love a good narrative-driven game and there are so many indie games that do that justice ♥
