Fanfiction: "Until I Burn Away"
Aug. 21st, 2019 02:09 pmTitle: "Until I Burn Away" (19,665 words) [AO3]
Chapters: 5/6
Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Rating/Warnings: Teen & Up / strong language, disturbing imagery, and mild gore
Characters: Seifer Almasy, Edea Kramer, Ultimecia
( Excerpt )
It's been an interesting story, to say the least. It has really brought into focus just how many things the game simply hand-waved away to get Seifer where he needed to be. Things like finding and raising the Lunatic Pandora, capturing Ellone, "meeting" Adel. I've tried to answer these questions as well as I could while maintaining a moderately entertaining narrative, and it's been one of the most challenging tasks I've had in a while.
I love FF8, love it to pieces, but writing this story really exposed some weak points in the canon narrative (but at least these aren't as bad as that whole ring business near the end of Disc 2; I cringe every time I replay that part). But I guess that's what fanfiction is for, to stretch our imaginations to fill in those gaps, kind of like this stuff.
Joking aside, this story has been a satisfying way for me to string together the various aspects of Seifer the game provides. It hasn't been easy, and it hasn't always been enjoyable (finding the Lunatic Pandora!), but I am proud of it, in a certain way.
Here's to the final chapter, coming soon!
