Fandom Snowflake Challenge, #9-14
Jan. 27th, 2020 04:05 pm
Yikes, I fell way behind on the Snowflake Challenge posts! January was ridiculously hectic, but things seem to finally be calming down, so I'll go ahead and try to catch up. These responses won't be as long or detailed as I'd usually like to write, but they're something.
Challenge #9 – Promote a canon you adore - None of the stories I adore are particularly obscure, and others have already promoted them far better than I ever could, so I'll skip this one.
Challenge #10 – Inspirations - For writing inspiration, I'd say Ellen Klages and Banana Yoshimoto. Both have a way of infusing the mundane with the magical, giving the impression that magic exists just beneath the surface of the everyday world, if you know where and how to look for it.
Challenge #11 – Fannish resources - My primary fandoms being video games, there's not a lot out there other than wikis and walkthrough videos. I do like using game scripts to check what characters said and did in canon, and to try to match their voices, but they're not always easy to find, and usually don't include all dialogue options. For FF8, I found a pretty good run-through of the game on the Let's Play Archive. While the author includes the usual (expected) snark (and an apparent dislike of Zell), they cover a lot of optional dialogue and situations, and offer surprisingly good insight on the story at certain points.
Challenge #12 – Act of Kindness - Not sure what to say about this one. I can be a nice person, a decent person, but I'm sure as hell not kind. Pretending that I am would feel disingenuous.
Challenge #13 – Create a fanwork - Hmm, another predicament. I can't really create something on the spot. I might revisit this one later, if I have the time.
Challenge #14 - Favorite trope - Wow, another tough one (that really shouldn't be tough at all)! I am seriously drawing a blank ... I tend to gravitate toward stories because of summaries or recommendations or familiarity with the characters involved, rather than tropes. I know what I don't like, and as long as the story doesn't include anything from that list, I'm usually good.
Not a very fun answer (or even really an answer at all, for that matter!) but I'm really stumped. :/
All caught up! For now …
